Pelikan has been a brand that I loved from the start. My first “real FP” was a Pelikan, the M205 Amethyst. Sadly I missed out on that particular ink, but have not made that mistake since! So it was a no brainer that I would try the new Edelstein color Smoky Quartz. At the end of this blog posting, you might have a chance to try it as well!
I love the Edelstein packaging and bottle, both are tasteful and of a high quality.
For this review I decided to ink up my new Montblanc Rouge et Noir Coral Snake ^_^.
Line going down on 68GSM Hippo Noto tomoe paper:
This ink had all of the characteristics of an Edelstein ink, awesome flow, good saturation, and really lovely shading, however it just did not do it for me. For some reason I kept seeing a green tinge to the brown which isn’t very flattering on the color. It does have that great shading, but not enough to keep me enamored with the color. Not my cup of tea, but perhaps its yours? Giveaway time!

Honestly there’s something about that sort of old parchment feel that this ink has that I just adore. It really is amazing!

There is hardly a brown ink I don’t enjoy. This looks no different! Yay smoky quartz.

I’m really digging how cool this brown is. So many other browns have a lot more red. I think I’ll like this one!
March 31, 2017 at 4:44 pm
Love the shading on this!
March 31, 2017 at 4:46 pm
That ink looks right up my alley. I’ve always wanted to try Edelstein. This looks like a good one to start with.
March 31, 2017 at 4:53 pm
Not sure how I feel about it. It’s really pretty, but I don’t think I’ll be picking up a bottle.

I have been preoccupied with purples and violets that I haven’t tried many brown inks yet but this dark rich brown looks amazing and the shading looks so sweet! I don’t see the green tinge you mentioned but I would like that even more! So if Lady Luck decides to turn her back on me I think I’ll be ordering this one shortly after! Great review once again! Already a follower!

Love the browns. Have an old time feel and look to them. Can’t seem to get that look with regular pens and ink.

I like the color of this one. It’s earthy

I love the color brown, there’s so many variations that I would like to try someday. Though I am curious to see the green tint.
March 31, 2017 at 5:30 pm
I would really like to try this ink, even if the sheen is green. I love the vintage feel of this. Sorry it disappointed you.

Oddly enough, this is the first IOTY from Pel that really caught my eye. Part of the color spectrum that I really like. Annnnd… I just haven’t gotten around to ordering it yet. Maybe it’s that giant box full of bottles of ink, maybe not.
We’ll see. 🙂

Great review; haven’t had the chance to try Edelstein yet. 🙂

I think this is a beautiful color and I like how “old fashioned” it looks! It would be a nice change from black ink. Thanks for the chance to win!!

I think the ink might have a pleasant, old-fashioned look on cream colored paper.

Is does look like you’ve written using a good strong cup of tea! It’s an interesting colour & seeing as I don’t have any Pelikan Inks I would love to win this one! Thanks for the chance!! That color really lives up to the name. I have some samples of smoky quartz and the color similarity is striking

Thanks for doing the giveaway! I have been waiting to get a good look at this ink. I love green and brown inks, especially those with nice shading. I have a number of other Pelikan Edelstein inks and I like them and theier beautiful bottles too. A member of our local pen club (IowaPen) said he is going to be bringing samples of this ink to a future meeting. Hope I win this so I can help with that! By the way I’m also a subscriber to your blog, the rules said to mention this. Now I am off to FPN to comment on your post there too! Thanks for the great review and giveaway!

This brown is so pretty! I think writing with this ink on a lovely light cream paper would make the piece look old world and a little vintage. Thanks for this giveaway! I am really touched by your generosity. ❤
April 1, 2017 at 5:14 am
I rather like the colour – based on your images since I’ve not encountered it in real life. It has a sort of vintage quality that appeals to me, like old leather bound books or a favourite old chair in a library. I don’t own a brown ink so I’d love to give it a home. Thanks for the opportunity to win your giveaway. (I’m a subscriber and commented on FB too.)

I’m a fan. It is an interesting color and would look great in a journal. A classic look to it. Thanks for the GAW.

I like the one brown I have which is yama-guri so I would like to try another. I like writing letters in brown Ii k for some reason.
April 1, 2017 at 4:55 pm
Quite a dusty brown. I imagine it’ll be handy if you wanted something a little on the professional side.
Thanks for the giveaway! And I’m subbed of course 🙂
April 1, 2017 at 5:01 pm
I like brown inks but not sure I like this one.
April 1, 2017 at 5:08 pm
I always like brown-but-not-veering-red inks. I see this as a really nice brown/gray and think I would use it a lot. And I got a used, but new to me, pen this week that I think will be my daily favorite; this would be great in it. Thank you for the opportunity.
April 2, 2017 at 2:53 am
It’s a very lovely color. I’ve always been a big fan of brown ink.
April 2, 2017 at 6:25 am
I’m not sure about this color, either. It looks great in some pictures, not so much in others.
April 2, 2017 at 7:50 am
I am totally a sucker for good names for ink shades, and I feel like they really nailed this color with “smoky quartz!”
April 2, 2017 at 8:22 am
I have been waiting for this color to come out!!! Beautiful
April 2, 2017 at 9:53 am
Thanks for this awesome giveaway! You know, if I win, I’ll have to buy another pen to match the ink! 😉
April 2, 2017 at 9:54 am
I can’t wait to try this color!
April 2, 2017 at 11:15 am
I wonder how close this ink is to iroshizuku yama-guri! Squishyink, have you done a drip on a paper towel? Maybe we’d see a bit of green there, as we did with the Curry …
(And BTW I’m already subscribed to you, both on here and on IG, and I’d love to score a bottle of this Smoky Quartz.)
April 2, 2017 at 2:34 pm
I still haven’t seen it in person, but from the Slack & IG posts it looks like a brown ink that I’m going to really like. As I often write on regular paper (can’t afford to supply my own rhodia or Clairefontaine for the office), I love inks that shade. Sheen never.shows up on inexpensive papers I use, but shading does.
This ink appears to have the shading that I like to see in my inks.
April 2, 2017 at 3:40 pm
Wow…I love how subtle this ink looks.
April 2, 2017 at 10:13 pm
I love the shading! It’s a nice, unique brown too. Definitely lacking from my ink collection lol.
